Organic buy list by age

One certified or third-party-checked product for each thing people shop for at that age, with a button straight to the brand. Every product here also appears on its category page, where you can compare the others.

We have not tested these products. Each one was checked against the brand’s own page and the certifier’s records. Product links may be affiliate links: if you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. How we choose.

0 to 6 months

Newborn

14 things to buy

Sleep, diapering and the first clothes. A baby sleeps on their back on a firm, flat mattress with only a fitted sheet: no blankets, pillows or bumpers in the crib.

Sitting, crawling, first foods

6 to 12 months

8 things to buy

Teething, bath time on the floor and in the tub, and the first time outdoors in the sun. Sunscreen joins the list now: the AAP advises keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sun.

Toddler and preschool

1 to 5 years

10 things to buy

Clothes that keep up, toys and art supplies for every surface in the house, and lunchbox food.

School age

5 to 10 years

8 things to buy

A big-kid bed, school clothes, and a lunchbox that comes home every day.

Tweens and teens

10 to 18 years

10 things to buy

The first personal-care shelf of their own, plus basics and sportswear they will actually wear.

College, first apartment, and you

18 and up

11 things to buy

Setting up a dorm room or a first place. Most dorm beds are Twin XL, so check the size before you order bedding.

The order of a list says nothing about quality. Certifications can lapse: check the certifier’s database before you buy. Product photos are credited on each category page.

Questions people ask

How did you choose the product for each row?

Each one is a pick from the matching category page, where every product was checked against the brand's own page and the certifier's records. We have not tested any of them. The other picks for that need are one click away under "More options". How we choose.

Why are car seats, gates and strollers not on the list?

This site covers products that can carry an organic or third-party material certification. Car seats, gates and strollers are safety equipment, judged on crash and fit standards we do not review, so they are left to the specialists.

Do I need every item?

No. The list is what people commonly shop for at each age. Start with what you need this week and skip the rest.

Do the buy buttons cost me anything extra?

No. Some product links may be affiliate links: if you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we list. Affiliate disclosure.
