Organic Mattress Toppers
A topper is a slab of latex or a quilt of wool inside a fabric cover. The organic claim that matters covers the core as well as the cover: GOLS for latex, GOTS for wool or for the finished topper. MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold add an ingredient screen and an emissions test. Each pick says which apply.

What organic means here
This page accepts GOTS for the finished topper or its cotton and wool, GOLS for a latex core, and MADE SAFE or GREENGUARD Gold where the brand states them. A topper with an organic cover over polyurethane or memory foam does not qualify. Each pick says whether the claim covers the whole topper or named parts.
Look for
- GOLS named for the latex core, with the certifier or licence number
- GOTS stated for the finished topper, or for the cover and any wool batting
- The latex type spelled out: Dunlop or Talalay, and whether each option is certified
- MADE SAFE or GREENGUARD Gold stated for this topper, not only for the brand's mattresses
Be wary of
- "Organic cotton cover" on a memory foam or gel foam topper
- A Talalay latex option sold beside a GOLS Dunlop option without saying it is not GOLS
- Certifications listed in a site-wide FAQ that never name the topper
Products that carry the certification

A latex topper in an organic cotton cover with no wool, sold in two thicknesses. The product page says the topper is GOTS certified as a finished product and that the Dunlop latex is also GOLS certified. It lists MADE SAFE, EWG Verified, GREENGUARD Gold and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I as well.
Good to know: The page says the softer Pure Talalay latex option is FSC certified but is not certified organic, so GOLS applies only to the Dunlop version. Contains natural rubber latex.

Products with a photo are shown first; otherwise the order says nothing about quality. Certifications can lapse: check the certifier’s database before you buy.
What is certified: the core, the cover or the whole topper
In a latex topper the core is nearly all of the product. GOLS is the standard for it: natural rubber latex from certified organic plantations, processed in certified manufacturing units, with limits for harmful substances and emission test requirements. The cover and any wool fall under GOTS, which follows organic fiber through every processing stage to the finished product.
Some brands certify the finished topper under GOTS. Others state GOTS for the cover and GOLS for the latex as two separate facts. Both are honest when worded clearly. What to avoid is an organic cover wrapped around a core nobody certified.
| Claim on the page | What it covers |
|---|---|
| GOTS certified topper | The finished product, as certified |
| GOTS certified organic cotton cover | The cover fabric only |
| GOLS certified latex | The latex core only |
| GREENGUARD Gold | Emissions from the product, not organic content |
Dunlop and Talalay are not certified the same way
Dunlop and Talalay are two ways of making latex foam. Two brands on this page sell both. One states plainly that its Talalay option is not certified organic while its Dunlop is GOLS certified. If you pick a firmness or feel that switches the latex type, check that the certification follows your choice.
The same care applies if you are matching a topper to a bed. Our page on organic mattresses covers the layers underneath.
Toppers and the federal flammability rules
The two federal mattress standards treat toppers differently from mattresses. The open-flame standard, 16 CFR part 1633, excludes mattress pads and mattress toppers from its definition of a mattress. The cigarette standard, part 1632, applies to mattresses and mattress pads, and CPSC describes a mattress pad as a thin, flat mat or cushion for use on top of a mattress. Under part 1632, a pad treated with a chemical flame retardant must be labeled with the letter T.
Whether a given topper counts as a mattress pad is a question for its maker. The brands above say they add no flame retardant chemicals, and one says wool batting serves as its flame barrier. Those are the brands' statements.
Emissions, ingredients and babies
GREENGUARD Gold limits emissions of more than 360 volatile organic compounds and total chemical emissions. MADE SAFE screens ingredients against a banned list its owner puts at more than 15,000 substances. Neither is an organic certification.
Do not put a topper on a crib mattress. The American Academy of Pediatrics lists mattress toppers among the soft objects to keep out of a baby's sleep area, for babies up to 1 year of age.
Questions people ask
Is a latex topper organic if it says natural latex?
Not on that word alone. Natural means the foam is made from rubber tree sap. Organic means the rubber came from certified organic plantations and was processed in a certified unit, which is what GOLS covers. Look for GOLS named for the latex with a certifier or licence number. One brand here says outright that its Talalay latex is natural and FSC certified but not certified organic.
Do mattress toppers have to pass the mattress fire tests?
The open-flame standard, 16 CFR part 1633, excludes mattress toppers and mattress pads from its definition of a mattress. The cigarette standard, part 1632, covers mattress pads, which CPSC describes as thin, flat mats or cushions used on top of a mattress. Ask the maker which standard its topper is tested to and what, if anything, serves as a fire barrier.
Can I use an organic topper to make a conventional mattress organic?
No. A topper changes the layer nearest to you and nothing underneath it. Certifications apply to the product they were issued for, so a GOTS or GOLS topper says nothing about the foam, adhesives or fire barrier in the mattress below. It can still be a reasonable step if replacing the mattress is not possible right now.
Are organic toppers free of wool?
Some are and some are not. Two picks on this page are described by their brands as free of wool or animal-based materials, and one has wool batting quilted into its casing. Wool is also sold as a topper fill on its own. The materials list on the product page is the place to check, especially if you avoid wool or animal fibers.
