Organic Bedding & Bath

In bedding and bath, organic means GOTS for cotton and wool and GOLS for latex. Sheets, towels and robes are single textiles, so one certificate can cover the whole product. Mattresses, toppers and pillows are assembled from parts, and the question on every page here is which parts the certificate actually covers.

This department covers what you sleep on and dry off with. The simple cases are woven goods. A set of organic sheets or organic towels is one fabric, and GOTS can follow it from a certified organic farm through spinning, dyeing and sewing to the finished product. USDA says textiles that meet GOTS may be sold as organic in the United States.

The harder cases are assembled products. An organic mattress may be GOTS certified as a finished product, or it may only contain GOTS cotton and GOLS latex inside a mattress nobody certified. The same goes for pillows and toppers. For each pick we say which claim the brand makes, in the brand's own words from its own page. We have not slept on, washed or otherwise tried any of them.

Two labels you will see here are not organic certifications. GREENGUARD Gold measures chemical emissions into indoor air. MADE SAFE screens ingredients against a banned list. Both are useful and neither tells you how the fiber was grown. Every mattress sold in the United States must also pass federal flammability tests, and the mattress page explains how each brand says it does that without added flame retardant chemicals. Crib and kids mattresses live in the nursery department.

Questions people ask

What does organic mean for bedding?

It means a textile certification, most often GOTS. GOTS requires certification of every processing stage from organic fiber to finished product, and its organic label grade needs at least 95 percent certified organic fibers. USDA says textiles that meet GOTS may be sold as organic in the United States. The USDA Organic seal itself may be used only when the finished product is certified under USDA's own organic regulations.

Is a GOTS certified mattress different from a mattress made with GOTS cotton?

Yes. When the finished mattress is certified, the whole product and the factory that built it were audited against the standard. When a brand says the mattress is made with GOTS certified cotton, the certificate covers that fabric and stops there. The latex, adhesives and fire barrier are outside it. Read the product page for which of the two the brand actually states.

Do organic mattresses have to pass fire tests?

Yes. Federal standards at 16 CFR parts 1632 and 1633 apply to mattresses sold in the United States, whatever they are made of. Part 1632 is a cigarette ignition test and part 1633 is an open-flame test with limits on heat release. The CPSC guidance describes performance limits. Brands that add no flame retardant chemicals typically say they pass using wool or the mattress's construction.

Is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 the same as organic?

No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the finished textile passed laboratory tests for harmful substances, with every thread and accessory tested against a list of more than 1,000 substances. It does not look at how the cotton was farmed. Sheets and towels made from conventional cotton can carry it. It is a useful extra beside GOTS, not a replacement for it.
