Organic Sheets
For sheets, organic means GOTS: a standard that follows the cotton from a certified organic farm through spinning, weaving, dyeing and sewing. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a different thing, a lab test of the finished fabric for harmful substances. Every pick below states GOTS on its own product page, and we say what else it claims.

What organic means here
Sheets are a single textile, so GOTS can cover the finished product. USDA says textiles that meet GOTS may be sold as organic in the United States. This page lists sheets whose brand states GOTS on the product page. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and MADE SAFE are noted as extras and do not replace it.
Look for
- "GOTS certified" on the product page or sewn-in label, with a licence number
- The fiber content line: 100% organic cotton, or the blend stated exactly
- An OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate number you can enter in the Label Check
- The weave named plainly (percale, sateen, flannel) instead of a thread count alone
Be wary of
- "Organic cotton" with no certifier or standard named anywhere
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 presented as if it meant organic
- "Bamboo" or "eucalyptus" sheets sold as organic with no standard or certifier named
Products that carry the certification
We have not tested these products. Each one was checked against the brand’s own page and the certifier’s records. Product links may be affiliate links: if you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. How we choose.

- GOTS
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
- Fair Trade Certified
A sateen set made from long-staple 100% organic cotton. The product page states that this is a GOTS Certified product, that each component has been tested under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 with the certificate number printed, and that it is made in a Fair Trade Certified factory.
Good to know: The Fair Trade claim is about the factory. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a test for harmful substances and is separate from the organic claim.

A 400 thread count sateen set. The product page lists the material as 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and the product certifications as GOTS and MADE SAFE, and says the set is made in India in a GOTS-certified facility.
Good to know: MADE SAFE is an ingredient screen, not an organic certification. The page also lists a vegan approval, which is not a certification this site tracks.

A brushed flannel set with an elastic band on the fitted sheet. The product page says it is crafted from GOTS certified organic cotton and that it is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, with the certificate number and testing institute printed.
Good to know: The page words the GOTS claim around the cotton and prints no GOTS licence number on this product, so look the brand up in the GOTS database. The link goes to the white colorway.

Organic Crinkled Percale Sheet Set
A washed percale set with a crinkled texture. The product page says it is crafted with 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and lists GOTS Certified among its details. The brand describes the fabric as ultra lightweight and cool to the touch.
Good to know: The link goes to one colorway; the brand sells the same set in other colors on separate pages. The page also shows a Fair Trade badge without saying which program or what it covers, so we have not listed it.

Products with a photo are shown first; otherwise the order says nothing about quality. Certifications can lapse: check the certifier’s database before you buy.
What GOTS covers on a set of sheets
GOTS requires certification of every processing stage, from the organic fiber to the finished product, and every company in the chain has to meet the same criteria. The fiber must be certified organic, grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or GMOs. The standard also sets chemical input restrictions, wastewater treatment rules and social criteria for workers.
There are two label grades. "Organic" needs at least 95 percent certified organic fibers. "Made with organic materials" needs at least 70 percent. A plain cotton sheet should be in the first grade, so a "made with" label on sheets is worth a second look at the fiber content.
GOTS versus OEKO-TEX Standard 100
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a label for textiles tested for harmful substances. Every thread, button and accessory is tested against a list of more than 1,000 substances, and bed linens fall in its product class for items with direct skin contact. It does not ask how the cotton was grown.
The two labels answer different questions, and a sheet can carry both. Our guide to GOTS vs OEKO-TEX compares them side by side.
| Question | GOTS | OEKO-TEX Standard 100 |
|---|---|---|
| Is the fiber certified organic? | Yes, required | Not assessed |
| Is the finished fabric tested for harmful substances? | Chemical inputs are restricted | Yes, lab tested |
| Are workers' conditions covered? | Yes, social criteria | Not by this label |
How to check a sheet claim yourself
- 1
Find the licence number
A GOTS label on a product should come with the certifier and a licence number. Look on the product page, the packaging or the sewn-in label.
- 2
Search the GOTS database
GOTS keeps a public database of certified suppliers, updated by its approved certification bodies. Search for the brand or its manufacturer and read which products are listed.
- 3
Check the OEKO-TEX number
If the page prints an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate number, enter it in the OEKO-TEX Label Check to see whether it is valid.
Sheets for cribs and toddler beds
Crib sheets are covered on their own page: see organic crib sheets. The American Academy of Pediatrics says to use a fitted sheet only in a crib, and lists non-fitted sheets among the loose bedding to keep out of a baby's sleep area. Those recommendations are for babies up to 1 year of age.
For the layers that go on top of adult sheets, see organic comforters and duvets.
Questions people ask
Are GOTS certified sheets the same as USDA Organic sheets?
Not quite. USDA says textiles that meet GOTS may be sold as organic in the United States. They may not show the USDA Organic seal or imply the finished product is USDA organic unless the finished product itself is certified under the USDA organic regulations. In practice, sheets sold as organic here carry the GOTS label and no USDA seal.
Does a higher thread count mean a better organic sheet?
Thread count is not part of any organic certification. GOTS looks at fiber origin, processing chemicals, wastewater and working conditions. It says nothing about how many threads are in a square inch. The weave tells you more about how a sheet will feel: brands describe percale as crisp and sateen as smooth. Read the fiber content and certification first, then the weave.
Is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 enough if I want organic sheets?
No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that a textile passed lab tests for harmful substances. It does not check whether the cotton was grown organically. A sheet made from conventional cotton or polyester can carry it. If organic farming is what you are paying for, the label to look for is GOTS, and OEKO-TEX is a useful extra.
Are bamboo sheets organic?
Be careful with that claim. None of the picks on this page is a bamboo sheet, and we found no bamboo sheet to list under this page's standard. An organic label on any sheet should trace to a named standard such as GOTS, with a licence number. If a bamboo or eucalyptus sheet says organic and names no certifier, ask the brand what exactly was certified.
Do organic sheets need special washing?
Follow the care label on the set you buy. Certification does not change how cotton is washed. One brand on this page tells buyers to use a cold, gentle cycle with like colors and to tumble dry low. Other brands may differ, so the label sewn into your own sheets is the one to follow.
