Organic Crib Sheets
An organic crib sheet is a fitted sheet whose cotton, dyes and sewing are covered by GOTS, which requires at least 95 percent certified organic fiber for its organic grade. Fit matters as much as fiber. The AAP and the CPSC both say a crib should hold a tight fitted sheet and nothing else.

What organic means here
Sheets are textiles, so a finished crib sheet can be GOTS certified from field to sewn product. This page accepts fitted crib sheets the maker states are made of GOTS certified organic cotton. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a useful extra, but it tests for harmful substances and does not make a sheet organic.
Look for
- "GOTS certified" with a certifier and licence number on the tag, package or product page
- A fitted sheet with elastic all the way around, sized for your mattress type: standard, mini, oval or bassinet
- A pocket depth that matches your mattress thickness, so the sheet stays tight
- The fiber stated plainly: 100% organic cotton, with any elastic or thread noted
Be wary of
- "Organic cotton" with no certification named
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 presented as if it meant organic
- Soft "bamboo" fabric sold as organic: the FTC says it has likely been turned into rayon or viscose
- Crib bedding sets that bundle a quilt, pillow or bumper with the sheet

What GOTS covers on a crib sheet
A sheet is the simplest thing in the nursery to certify, because it is all textile. GOTS has two label grades. "Organic" requires at least 95 percent certified organic fibers. "Made with organic materials" requires at least 70 percent. The standard also restricts the chemicals used in processing, such as dyes and finishes, and includes social criteria for the factories. Certification bodies audit certified sites in person.
So a GOTS certified sheet tells you about the whole chain: the cotton, the spinning, the dyeing and the sewing. "Made with organic cotton" on its own tells you about the raw fiber and nothing after it.
GOTS and OEKO-TEX are not the same claim
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a label for textiles tested for harmful substances. OEKO-TEX says every thread, button and accessory is tested, and that product class 1, for babies and children up to 3 years, has its strictest limits. That is worth having on something a baby lies on for hours.
It is a test of the finished item, though, not a statement about farming. A conventional cotton or polyester sheet can carry it. If organic fiber is what you are paying for, GOTS is the label that says so. Our guide to GOTS vs OEKO-TEX goes through the difference.
The safe sleep rule: one fitted sheet, nothing else
The AAP's safe sleep guidance, based on its 2022 policy, is short on this point: use a fitted sheet only, and nothing else should be in the crib with your baby. The same page lists non-fitted sheets, blankets, quilts, comforters, pillows and bumper pads among the things to keep out. The CPSC says the same: nothing but a fitted sheet in a crib, bassinet or play yard.
That rules out the flat sheet in a matching set, and the top sheet tucked in at the foot. If your baby needs more warmth, the AAP suggests layers of clothing or a wearable blanket. See organic sleep sacks.
Getting the fit right
A sheet that pops off a corner is loose bedding. Match the sheet to the mattress type first: a standard crib sheet will not sit tight on a mini crib, oval crib or play yard mattress. Then compare the pocket depth on the product page with the thickness of your crib mattress.
Wash a new sheet before use, following the care label, and check the fit again afterward. Cotton can shrink, and elastic wears out. When a sheet no longer grips all four corners, replace it.
Questions people ask
Are organic crib sheets safer for sleep than regular ones?
Not for sleep safety. What keeps a baby safe is a firm, flat mattress with one tight fitted sheet and nothing else in the crib, and any fitted sheet that fits can do that. Organic certification is about how the cotton was grown and processed, including which dyes and finishes were allowed. Choose organic for those reasons, and choose fit first.
How do I check that a crib sheet is really GOTS certified?
Look for the GOTS logo together with the name of the certification body and a licence number, on the sewn-in label, the package or the product page. One brand on this page prints its licence number in the specifications. A page that says only organic cotton, with no certifier and no number, is making a weaker claim. Our GOTS label page explains where to look the number up.
Can I use a flat sheet or a blanket in the crib?
Not for a baby under 1 year. The AAP says to use a fitted sheet only and lists non-fitted sheets and blankets among the items to keep out of the sleep space, and its recommendations apply to babies up to 1 year of age. For warmth, dress your baby in layers or use a wearable blanket. Talk to your pediatrician about when to change that for your child.
How many crib sheets do I need?
Enough that a clean, dry, fitted sheet is always on hand when one needs washing in the night, which for most households means more than one. There is no official number. What matters is that you never make do with a towel, a flat sheet or a blanket on the mattress because the fitted sheets are all in the wash.
Is bamboo crib bedding organic?
Be skeptical of that claim. The certification this page accepts is GOTS, which grades a textile by its share of certified organic fibers, and the FTC says bamboo processed into soft fabric has likely been turned into rayon or viscose, with no trace of the original plant left. If a bamboo sheet claims to be organic, ask which certification covers the finished fabric. If the answer is only OEKO-TEX Standard 100, that is a substance test, not an organic claim.
