Organic Crib Mattresses

An organic crib mattress is one whose maker holds GOTS certification for the finished mattress, not only for the cotton cover. GOLS covers a latex layer, and GREENGUARD Gold covers emissions from the whole product. Whatever the label, the mattress must be firm, flat and a tight fit for your crib, as the CPSC and AAP require.

What organic means here

A mattress is assembled from parts, so we ask which certification covers what. We list crib mattresses the maker states are GOTS certified as a finished product. GOLS is noted as a component certification for latex. GREENGUARD Gold and MADE SAFE are noted as whole-product screens for emissions and ingredients. None of these is a sleep safety rating.

Look for

  • GOTS named for the mattress itself, with the certifier and licence number, not only "GOTS certified organic cotton"
  • A plain list of every layer: cover, fill, core, waterproofing and what stands in for a fire barrier
  • GREENGUARD Gold for the finished mattress, which you can look up in the UL SPOT database
  • The exact dimensions, and a statement that it fits a full-size crib or names the cribs it fits
  • A firm infant side if the mattress is two-sided

Be wary of

  • "Made with organic cotton" with no certifier named: that describes one material, not the mattress
  • GOLS used as if it certified the whole mattress when it applies to the latex
  • Soft, plush or pillow-top surfaces sold for infants
  • Aftermarket mattresses for play yards or mini cribs that do not name the exact models they fit

Products that carry the certification

  1. Naturepedic Breathable Organic 2-Stage Baby Crib Mattress

Breathable Organic 2-Stage Baby Crib Mattress

The product page lists GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free for this mattress. It is made with GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill, a wipe-clean waterproof surface and a removable washable cover, in lightweight or innerspring versions with a firmer infant side.

Good to know: GOTS here covers a mattress that also contains what the brand calls GOTS-allowed accessory materials, including the waterproof layer and the core. Those parts are not organic fiber. The removable cover is sold as part of the mattress, not as a separate pad.

    Organic Crib Mattress

Avocado states the crib mattress is a GOTS certified organic product, EWG Verified, GREENGUARD Gold certified and verified formaldehyde free by UL. It is a two-stage mattress built from organic coconut fiber bound with GOLS certified organic latex, plus GOTS certified organic wool and cotton.

Good to know: GOLS covers the latex only, as Avocado's own certifications page says. Contains natural rubber latex and wool, which matter if your family has a latex or wool allergy. Ask your pediatrician if unsure.

    Emily Organic Crib Mattress

The product page states the Emily is GOTS certified and GOLS certified, MADE SAFE certified and GREENGUARD Gold certified, and prints the certificate numbers. It pairs a firm innerspring with a coconut coir layer and a quilted cover of GOTS organic cotton and wool.

Good to know: The coir layer is bound with latex and the cover is quilted with wool, so check for latex or wool allergies. The brand describes GOLS as a certification of its latex and its factory.

Which certification covers the whole mattress

Read a mattress page the way you would read a sandwich label: the claim on the front may describe one ingredient. The table sorts the labels you will see by what they can cover.

GOTS is a textile standard. Its top grade, labeled organic, requires at least 95 percent certified organic fibers, and certified sites are audited on location. When a maker holds its own GOTS certification, it can sell the finished mattress as a GOTS certified product. When it only buys certified fabric, the claim stops at the fabric. GOLS is run by Control Union for organically grown natural rubber latex, and sets limits on fillers and emissions for that latex.

The safety rule every crib mattress must meet

Since August 2022, crib mattresses sold in the United States fall under a federal rule, 16 CFR part 1241, which builds on the ASTM F2933 standard. According to the CPSC, it adds a firmness test to address suffocation on overly soft mattresses, fit requirements to address entrapment in gaps, a coil spring requirement to address cuts, and warning labels. It covers full-size crib mattresses and mattresses for non-full-size cribs and play yards.

Crib mattresses must be tested by a CPSC-accepted third-party lab, and the maker or importer must issue a Children's Product Certificate. Organic and conventional mattresses face the same test. An organic certification does not replace it, and a mattress is not firmer or flatter because its cotton was grown organically.

Fit, size and aftermarket mattresses

The CPSC describes a full-size crib mattress as 52 3/8 inches by 28 inches, with a tolerance of 5/8 inch. HealthyChildren.org gives a simple check at home: if you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the side or end of the crib, the mattress does not fit that crib.

Mini cribs, oval cribs and play yards are where fit goes wrong. Under the rule, an aftermarket mattress for one of these must be tested with each product it claims to fit and must name those models on its packaging. The CPSC says not to buy or use one made after August 2022 that does not list your crib or play yard.

Materials worth reading closely

Waterproofing is the layer to ask about. Organic cotton absorbs liquid, so a wipe-clean crib mattress has a waterproof surface made of something else. Makers should say what it is. If the mattress has no waterproof layer, see organic crib mattress pads and keep whatever you add thin and tight.

Fire rules are the other one. Crib mattresses fall under the federal flammability standards in 16 CFR parts 1632 and 1633, which are performance tests: the CPSC guidance sets limits on burning, not a list of required chemicals. Organic makers usually say how they pass, often with wool. Latex and wool are common in organic mattresses and both are possible allergens. Questions people ask

Is a GOTS certified crib mattress different from one with a GOTS cotton cover?

Yes. A GOTS certified mattress means the maker holds certification for the finished product, so the fibers, the processing and the allowed non-fiber parts were all reviewed. A GOTS cotton cover means one layer came from a certified supplier and says nothing about the core, the fill or the waterproofing. The wording on the product page tells you which claim is being made. Look for a licence number you can check.

Can a crib mattress be GOLS certified?

GOLS is written for organically grown natural rubber latex, and Control Union says it sets limits for harmful substances, emissions, and polymer and filler content. In a crib mattress, that tells you about the latex layer. It does not tell you about the cotton, the wool or the springs. Brands that use the label carefully, including one on this page, say in their own words that it applies to the latex.

How firm should a crib mattress be?

Firm enough that it does not indent when your baby lies on it, in the words of the AAP's safe sleep guidance. The federal crib mattress rule also includes a firmness test meant to address suffocation on overly soft mattresses. Two-stage mattresses have a firmer infant side and a slightly softer toddler side. Follow the maker's instructions on which side to use and when to flip.

Does GREENGUARD Gold mean a crib mattress is organic?

No. GREENGUARD Gold is a UL Solutions certification for chemical emissions. Certified products meet lower emission limits intended for sensitive settings such as nurseries, schools and healthcare facilities. It covers the finished mattress, which is useful, but it does not look at how the cotton, wool or latex was grown. A mattress can be GREENGUARD Gold certified and contain no organic material at all.

Are organic crib mattresses free of flame retardant chemicals?

Not by definition, so read the product page. Federal flammability standards apply to every crib mattress and are performance tests, which leaves makers to choose how to pass. Each brand on this page states that its mattress is made without flame retardant chemicals, and one says wool is the only fire barrier in its mattress. Treat that as the maker's statement, and look for it in writing.
