Organic Kids Mattresses

An organic kids mattress is a twin or full mattress the maker has had GOTS certified as a finished product. Many others are sold as natural or organic because one layer, usually GOLS certified latex, is organic. Both can be reasonable choices, as long as the label tells you which one you are buying. None of them is for a baby.

What organic means here

A mattress is assembled from cotton, wool, latex and steel, and no single certification describes all of that. GOTS can cover the finished mattress when the maker is certified. GOLS covers the latex. GREENGUARD Gold and MADE SAFE screen the whole product for emissions and ingredients. Each pick says which label applies to what.

Look for

  • GOTS stated for the mattress itself, with a licence number, not only for the cotton cover
  • GOLS described as covering the latex, which is all it can cover
  • GREENGUARD Gold for the finished mattress, to cover emissions
  • Every layer listed, including what the maker uses to meet fire standards
  • The height, if it is going on a bunk bed, trundle or loft

Be wary of

  • "Natural" or "eco" in the name with no certification for the finished mattress
  • A single component certificate presented as if it covered everything
  • Latex or wool not mentioned up front, when your child has an allergy to either
  • Using a kids mattress in a crib, or for a child under 1 year

Products with a photo are shown first; otherwise the order says nothing about quality. Certifications can lapse: check the certifier’s database before you buy.

Whole-mattress and component certifications

The useful question is always: certified what? GOTS is a textile standard, and its organic grade requires at least 95 percent certified organic fibers. A maker that holds GOTS certification can label the finished mattress, with the standard's permitted non-fiber parts such as steel springs. A maker that only buys certified cotton can say the cotton is certified and no more.

GOLS is the latex standard run by Control Union. It covers organically grown natural rubber latex and sets limits for harmful substances, emissions, and polymer and filler content. In a hybrid mattress it describes one layer. GREENGUARD Gold is different again: UL tests chemical emissions from the finished product and does not look at organic content at all.

These are not mattresses for babies

A kids mattress is built for a child in a bed, and it is not made to fit a crib. The AAP's safe sleep guidance for babies up to 1 year of age calls for a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard that meets CPSC standards, with a mattress designed for that specific crib. A twin mattress on the floor does not meet that description.

The AAP's nursery checklist says to move a child out of the crib when they reach 35 inches tall. Until then, stay with a proper organic crib mattress. If your toddler is ready earlier or later than you expected, your pediatrician can help you judge.

Fire standards, wool and what makers disclose

Youth mattresses are covered by the same two federal flammability standards as adult and crib mattresses, 16 CFR parts 1632 and 1633. The CPSC describes them as tests: one for ignition from a lighted cigarette, one that measures the size of a fire over 30 minutes. The guidance sets performance limits and does not prescribe a chemical.

That leaves the method to the maker, and it is worth asking what it is. One maker on this page says wool is the only fire barrier in its mattress. A product page that lists every layer and says how the mattress passes is a good sign. Our guide on how to choose an organic mattress covers this in more depth.

Latex, wool and allergies

Three of the four mattresses on this page contain natural rubber latex, and all four contain wool. If your child has a diagnosed latex or wool allergy, ask your pediatrician or allergist before buying. Latex-free organic mattresses exist, and one is listed here. For adult sizes and all-latex designs, see organic mattresses.

Questions people ask

What makes a kids mattress organic?

In the strict sense, GOTS certification of the finished mattress, held by the maker. That means the cotton and wool are certified organic fiber, processing was reviewed, and the non-fiber parts are ones the standard permits. A mattress with one organic layer, such as GOLS certified latex, has an organic component. Both kinds appear on this page, and each listing says which it is.

Is GOLS certified latex enough to call a mattress organic?

It is enough to call the latex organic. GOLS is written for organically grown natural rubber latex and sets limits on fillers and harmful substances in it. It says nothing about the cover, the wool or the springs. A brand that names its mattress natural and reserves organic for the latex is describing its certification accurately. Look for GOTS if you want the whole mattress covered.

When can a child move from a crib mattress to a kids mattress?

The AAP's nursery checklist says to move your child to another bed when they are 35 inches tall. Height is the trigger it names, not age. Under 1 year, a baby should sleep only on a firm, flat crib, bassinet or play yard mattress. Between those points, your pediatrician can help you decide based on your own child.

How thick can a mattress be on a top bunk?

Follow the label on the bunk bed. The CPSC requires bunk beds to be marked with the proper mattress size and thickness, and requires the tops of the upper bunk guardrails to be no less than 5 inches above the top of the mattress. A mattress thicker than the label allows shortens that margin. Measure the mattress you are considering before you order.

Do organic kids mattresses contain flame retardant chemicals?

Read each product page, because organic certification and fire compliance are separate things. Every mattress sold in the United States must pass federal flammability tests, and the rules leave the method to the maker. The makers listed here state that their kids mattresses are made without chemical flame retardants or without fiberglass and polyurethane foam. Look for that statement in writing, along with what is used instead.
