Organic Nursery & Sleep
In the nursery, organic is a claim about materials, and each certification covers one kind: GOTS for cotton and wool textiles, GOLS for latex, and GREENGUARD Gold or MADE SAFE for assembled things like mattresses and cribs. None of them is a safety rating for sleep. Safe sleep rules come from the AAP and the CPSC.

This department covers the things a baby sleeps on, under and next to: crib and kids mattresses, fitted sheets, blankets, mattress pads, changing pads, cribs and dressers. Sheets and blankets are the simple case. They are textiles, so a finished sheet can carry GOTS from the cotton field to the sewn product.
Mattresses are harder, because a mattress is assembled from parts. One certification can cover the whole finished mattress while another covers a single layer inside it. GOLS applies to latex. GREENGUARD Gold measures chemical emissions from the finished product and says nothing about how any fiber was grown. On every pick in organic crib mattresses we say which is which. Wood furniture cannot be certified organic at all, so cribs and nursery furniture are listed for emissions testing, wood sourcing and what the maker discloses.
One thing no label on this site changes: how a baby should sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics says to use a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet and nothing else, for babies up to 1 year of age. An organic blanket is still a blanket, and it stays out of the crib during that first year. Every page here that involves a crib repeats the rule and links its source.

Questions people ask
Is an organic crib mattress safer for sleep than a regular one?
Not in the way safe sleep experts mean. Sleep safety depends on a firm, flat surface that fits the crib tightly, which the federal crib mattress rule in 16 CFR part 1241 tests for on every crib mattress, organic or not. Organic certifications cover how materials were grown and processed. GREENGUARD Gold covers chemical emissions. They answer different questions, so check both.
Can a whole crib mattress be certified organic?
A finished mattress can be certified to GOTS when the maker holds its own certification for the product, and several brands on our crib mattress page say theirs is. Many other mattresses only contain a GOTS certified cotton cover or a GOLS certified latex layer. The product page or law tag should say which. If it only says made with organic cotton, assume the claim covers that one material.
When can my baby sleep with a blanket?
The AAP safe sleep recommendations apply to babies up to 1 year of age, and during that time loose blankets, quilts, comforters and pillows stay out of the sleep space. The AAP suggests dressing your baby in layers or using a wearable blanket instead. Before a first birthday, a baby blanket is for supervised awake time, the stroller and the floor. Ask your pediatrician about your own child.
What does GREENGUARD Gold mean on a crib or dresser?
It means the finished product was tested for chemical emissions into indoor air and met the lower limits UL Solutions sets for sensitive settings such as nurseries and schools. It is not an organic claim and it does not tell you where the wood came from. For wood sourcing, look for FSC. For structural safety, the crib must meet the CPSC crib standard regardless of any other label.
