Organic Crib Mattress Pads & Protectors
An organic crib mattress pad is a thin, fitted protector with GOTS certified organic cotton on both faces and, if it is waterproof, a plastic film in the middle that is not organic. For a baby under 1 year it should add no softness at all: the AAP lists mattress toppers among the things to keep out of the crib.

What organic means here
The cotton in a pad can be GOTS certified. The waterproof film cannot be organic, so the certification never describes the whole pad in the way it describes a sheet. This page accepts thin fitted protectors whose makers state the cotton is GOTS certified and name the waterproof material, and it notes MADE SAFE where claimed.
Look for
- "GOTS certified organic cotton" with the certifier or licence number, and a note of what else is in the pad
- The waterproof layer named: polyurethane or TPU film, rather than "waterproof backing"
- A fitted style with a skirt or elastic sized for your mattress, so it cannot bunch under the sheet
- Thin and flat: no quilting, batting or loft for a baby under 1 year
Be wary of
- Quilted, padded or "plush" pads sold for infant cribs
- "Organic" on a pad whose only organic part is the top fabric, with no certifier named
- Vinyl or PVC waterproofing, or a waterproof layer the maker will not identify
- A letter "T" on the label, which the CPSC requires on pads treated with a chemical flame retardant

The product page lists GOTS, certified by Control Union, and MADE SAFE for this pad. It is GOTS certified organic cotton jersey with a thin TPU waterproof barrier, made in a GOTS certified facility, and the fitted version has an organic cotton skirt.
Good to know: The TPU film is a plastic, not an organic fiber. A flat version is also sold: in a crib, use the fitted one so nothing can shift under the sheet.

Avocado describes a thin polyurethane film between two layers of GOTS certified organic cotton, and gives the split as 95% cotton and 5% waterproofing layer. The page also claims MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I and GREENGUARD Gold.
Good to know: The waterproof layer is polyurethane, which is not organic. The product page prints no licence numbers, so use the brand's certifications page to check them.

The product page describes two layers of soft jersey GOTS certified organic cotton around a thin thermoplastic polyurethane moisture barrier, fitted with an organic cotton skirt and elastic perimeter, and lists Crib among the sizes.
Good to know: The GOTS claim is made for the cotton layers, not for the protector as a finished product. The moisture barrier is a polyurethane film. Choose the Crib size, not a larger one tucked under.

What the AAP guidance means for a mattress pad
The AAP's safe sleep guidance, based on its 2022 policy, says to use a firm, flat sleep surface and a fitted sheet only, with nothing else in the crib. Its list of soft items to keep out of the sleep space includes mattress toppers, along with quilts, comforters, pillows and blankets. It defines firm as a surface that does not indent when your baby lies on it.
The AAP page does not mention waterproof protectors by name. So we read it narrowly. A padded or quilted pad acts like a topper and does not belong under a baby in the first year. A thin, tight, fitted protector that adds no cushioning is a different object, but it is still something you are adding to the crib. If your crib mattress already has a wipe-clean waterproof surface, you may not need one at all. If you are unsure, ask your pediatrician.
What the organic claim covers
A waterproof protector is a sandwich: fabric, film, fabric. GOTS is a textile standard whose organic grade requires at least 95 percent certified organic fibers, so it can speak for the cotton. The film in the middle is a plastic. On the three pads listed here it is polyurethane or TPU, and each maker says so.
That is why the wording differs from pick to pick. One maker lists GOTS for the pad and names the certifier. Another states GOTS for the cotton layers only. Neither is hiding anything, but they are not the same claim, and we note which is which. MADE SAFE is a separate ingredient screen that two of these makers also claim for the finished pad.
| Part of the pad | What it usually is | Can it be organic? |
|---|---|---|
| Top and bottom fabric | Cotton jersey or sateen | Yes, GOTS |
| Waterproof layer | Polyurethane or TPU film | No |
| Skirt and elastic | Cotton knit, sometimes elastic | Cotton yes, elastic no |
Fire rules and the letter T
Mattress pads fall under one federal flammability standard, 16 CFR part 1632, which the CPSC describes as a test of resistance to ignition from a lighted cigarette. The rule is a performance test and does not require any particular chemical. Pads that are treated with a chemical flame retardant must be labeled with the letter "T" and care instructions, according to the CPSC. Checking the sewn-in label for that letter takes a few seconds.
Pads for toddlers and bigger beds
After the first birthday the picture changes, and quilted cotton pads sized for a crib mattress are often sold for toddlers. Those are a comfort layer, not an infant product. For bigger beds, see organic kids mattresses, and keep the same habit of asking what the waterproof layer is made of. Whatever the age, a tight organic crib sheet goes over the pad.
Questions people ask
Do I need a mattress pad on a crib mattress?
Often not. Many crib mattresses have a wipe-clean waterproof surface, and the AAP's guidance calls for a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only. A protector earns its place when the mattress has an absorbent cotton surface with no waterproofing. In that case use one thin, fitted protector under the sheet, and check with your pediatrician if you have questions about your setup.
Is a waterproof crib mattress protector safe for a newborn?
The AAP does not address protectors by name. It says to keep the surface firm and flat, to use a fitted sheet only, and to keep mattress toppers and other soft items out. A thin, fitted protector that adds no padding and cannot come loose is the only kind that fits with that advice. Quilted or cushioned pads do not. Your pediatrician can tell you what they recommend.
Can a waterproof mattress pad be fully organic?
No. The cotton can be certified organic, but a waterproof barrier is a plastic film, typically polyurethane, and there is no organic version of that. A careful label says the cotton is GOTS certified and names the film. Be wary of a pad sold simply as organic and waterproof with no materials list, because one of those two words is carrying more than it can.
What is the difference between a mattress pad, a protector and a topper?
The words are used loosely. A protector is usually a thin barrier against leaks. A pad often has some quilting. A topper is a thicker comfort layer. For a baby under 1 year the name matters less than the thickness: the AAP lists mattress toppers among the items to keep out of the sleep space, so anything that adds softness is out.
How do I check the GOTS claim on a mattress pad?
Look for the name of the certification body and a licence number on the product page, the package or the sewn-in label, then check whether the claim is made for the pad or for the cotton. One pad on this page names its certifier, and another brand publishes licence numbers on a separate certifications page. Our GOTS label page explains where to look a number up.
