Organic Gifts
A gift set is a bundle of products, and "organic" has to be true of each one. Clothing and blankets are certified under GOTS. Food, tea and some balms carry the USDA Organic seal. Our gift pages list ready-made sets sold by the brand that makes them, and say which items in the box the certification covers.

Gift sets are where organic claims get loosest. A box with a certified bodysuit, a book and a bottle of baby wash can be sold as an organic gift set on the strength of one item. So the rule in this department is simple: every item in a set has to meet the standard of its own department. For textiles that is GOTS. For food and drink it is the USDA Organic seal. Anything else in the box is named in the pick's caveat.
We list ready-made sets and boxes from a single brand, because that gives you one company and one set of labels to check. On baby shower gifts and gifts for new moms, that means clothing, blankets and body care. On food gift baskets, it means boxes sent by the farm or maker. We have not opened or sampled any of them. We read the product pages and the certifications.
Some things a gift can contain cannot be certified organic at all: a wooden toy, a candle, a board book. That does not make them bad gifts. It means the word organic does not apply to them, and a seller who uses it anyway is being loose with it. Subscription boxes add one more thing to read, the renewal and cancellation terms.

Questions people ask
What makes a gift set organic?
Each item in it has to be certified under the rule that fits it. GOTS covers clothing and other textiles, with at least 95 percent certified organic fibers for its "organic" label grade. The USDA Organic seal covers food and qualifying body care, also at 95 percent organic ingredients or more. A set with one certified item and several uncertified ones is a set that includes an organic item.
Why do you only list sets sold by the brand itself?
Because a claim is easier to check at its source. A brand's own product page says what is in the box and what certification it states, and its certifier can be looked up. Baskets assembled by gift retailers combine many companies' products, each with its own status, and the contents can change. We link to the maker so you can read the same page we did.
Is an organic gift safer for a baby?
Organic certification is about how fibers and ingredients are grown and processed. It is not a product safety test. Baby gifts still have to meet the ordinary rules: the AAP advises keeping blankets and soft toys out of a baby's sleep area for the first year, and toys must meet federal toy safety rules. Check both the label and the intended use.
