Organic Baby Shower Gifts

An organic baby gift set is a bundle, and the word has to hold for every piece in the box. For clothing, blankets and soft toys that means GOTS certified cotton, named on the product page. Check each item, because sets often mix certified textiles with a book, a wash or a toy that is not.

What organic means here

Every item in a gift set has to meet the standard of its own department. For baby clothing and blankets that is GOTS certification. This page lists ready-made sets sold by a brand, where the brand states GOTS for the textiles, and each caveat names anything in the box the claim does not cover.

Look for

  • GOTS named on the set's own product page, not only on the home page
  • A list of exactly what is in the box
  • A certifier name or licence number for the brand
  • Sizes that fit a newborn through the first months
  • The return policy for gifts, since sizes are a guess

Be wary of

  • A set called organic where only the bodysuit is certified
  • "Contents may vary" on a set you are buying for its certification
  • Blanket and lovey sets pictured in a crib with a sleeping baby
  • Skincare samples added to a clothing box with no ingredient list

Products that carry the certification

We have not tested these products. Each one was checked against the brand’s own page and the certifier’s records. Product links may be affiliate links: if you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. How we choose.

Baby Blanket Gift Set with Moon Lovey - Beige

A pointelle knit baby blanket with a matching moon-shaped lovey. The product page says the set is crafted from GOTS certified organic cotton, and states that Makemake Organics is a GOTS certified brand, with its licence number printed on the page.

Good to know: The page does not say what the lovey is stuffed with. Blankets and loveys are for awake, supervised time: the AAP says to keep them out of a baby's sleep area.

    Mitten + Bootie Gift Set

One pair of booties and one pair of mittens in a reusable organic muslin bag, sized 0 to 3 months. The product page says the set is made of organic Egyptian cotton certified by GOTS, and the brand's certifications page names its certifier and licence number.

Good to know: A small set with two items, both cotton. Nothing in it falls outside the textile claim.

  3. 3Monica + AndyFour-piece newborn box

    Hospital Cuddle Box

A boxed set for the hospital stay with a coming home blanket, a top knot cap, a top and a pant. The product page says all four pieces are made with organic cotton, and the brand's home page describes its products as GOTS certified organic.

Good to know: The GOTS statement is on the brand's home page, not on this product page, and no licence number is shown. Check the sewn-in labels when the box arrives. The blanket is not for use in the crib.

Products with a photo are shown first; otherwise the order says nothing about quality. Certifications can lapse: check the certifier’s database before you buy.

A gift set is only as organic as each item in it

A single bodysuit is easy to check. A box with eight things in it is not, and that is where the word organic gets stretched. One certified item can lend its label to a whole set in the product title.

So read the contents list, then ask the organic question once per item. Clothing, blankets, burp cloths and towels are textiles, and GOTS is the certification that applies. A board book, a bottle of baby wash or a plastic rattle in the same box is judged by different rules or by none. The organic baby registry checklist sorts baby items by which label fits.

We left large layette boxes off this page when the brand's page for the box did not state a certification for the contents, even where the brand is certified for other products.

How to check GOTS on a boxed gift

  1. 1

Find the claim on the set's own page

A GOTS statement on a brand's home page is a start. The product page for the set, or the label sewn into each piece, is the evidence.

  2. 2

    Look for the label elements

A GOTS product label must show the logo, the label grade, a reference to the certification body and the certification number of the certified company.

  3. 3

    Know the two grades

"Organic" means at least 95 percent certified organic fibers. "Made with organic materials" covers 70 to 94 percent.

  4. 4

    Search the public database

GOTS keeps a database of certified suppliers. A brand name or licence number should turn up there.

Blankets, loveys and soft toys in gift sets

Many baby gift sets are built around a blanket or a small plush toy. They make good gifts, with one thing the giver should know and can pass on kindly.

Choosing a set the parents will use

  • Consider a size beyond newborn if the brand offers one, so the gift is still in use a few months on.
  • Pick plain, washable pieces over outfits with many parts.
  • Keep the gift receipt in the box, since returns on gift sets differ from brand to brand.
  • If the parents have a registry, match it. Our pages on organic baby bodysuits and organic baby blankets list single items to add.

Questions people ask

What makes a baby gift set organic?

Each item has to qualify on its own. For clothing, blankets and other textiles, the certification to look for is GOTS, which requires at least 95 percent certified organic fibers for the "organic" label grade. A set is not organic because one piece is, or because the brand sells other certified products. Read the list of contents and check the claim for each thing in the box.

Is GOTS certified the same as made with organic cotton?

No. "Made with organic cotton" describes the raw fiber and comes with no certificate of its own. GOTS certification covers the textile product, and a real GOTS label carries the logo, a label grade, the certification body and a certification number. If a set's page says organic cotton without naming a certifier, treat it as an unverified claim until you see the sewn-in label.

Is a blanket a safe baby shower gift?

Yes, as long as it is used as intended. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping blankets, quilts and toys out of a baby's sleep area, and its safe sleep recommendations apply up to 1 year of age. A gift blanket is for supervised, awake time, such as stroller walks and floor play. Parents with questions can ask their pediatrician.

What size should I buy for a baby shower gift?

Brands size by age range, and the ranges differ from one brand to the next. One set on this page is sold in 0 to 3 months only, and another comes in preemie, newborn and 0 to 3 month sizes. If you do not know how big the baby will be, a larger size or a blanket set avoids the guess. Keep the gift receipt.

Are organic baby gift sets worth it?

That depends on what the parents value. A GOTS certified set tells them the cotton was grown organically and processed under the standard's rules. It does not make clothing safer in any way a federal rule measures, and it is not a medical claim. If the family cares about organic textiles, a small certified set is a more honest gift than a large box with one certified piece.
