Organic and Non-Toxic Play Mats
On a play mat, "organic" can only describe a textile part, usually a cotton cover certified to GOTS. The padding inside is foam, latex or polyester batting, which is judged by other labels such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or GREENGUARD Gold. Read the claim for each layer, and treat any mat as a place for awake, supervised play.

What organic means here
A whole play mat is not certified organic. This page accepts GOTS for the fabric cover and looks for a named test label on the filling, such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Each pick states which layer each certification applies to, because that is where mat marketing gets vague.
Look for
- GOTS named for the cover fabric, with a licence or certifier number
- The filling named: natural latex, polyester batting, foam type
- A test label on the filling, with what it applies to
- A removable, washable cover or clear cleaning instructions
- A floor-use-only and not-for-sleep statement
Be wary of
- "Organic play mat" where only the top fabric is organic cotton
- "Non-toxic foam" with no standard or test named
- A certification logo with no word on which layer it covers
- Padded mats shown in photos as a place for a baby to nap

A round, reversible quilted mat. The product page says the shell is GOTS certified organic cotton, the batting inside is OEKO-TEX certified poly fill, and the mat is made at a GOTS certified factory. The page also prints the brand's GOTS licence number.
Good to know: The organic claim is for the cotton shell. The batting is polyester, tested to OEKO-TEX, which checks for harmful substances and says nothing about how a fiber was grown. A quilted mat is thin padding, not a crash pad.

A hexagonal quilted mat in organic cotton poplin with a bee-shaped rattle toy. The product page lists the composition as organic cotton with a recycled polyester filler, and its certificates section says the cotton fabric is certified by GOTS and the product meets ASTM F963.
Good to know: GOTS covers the cotton fabric only. The filling is recycled polyester, which the page says is certified to the Global Recycled Standard, a recycled content label, not an organic one.

Organic Cotton & Foam Play Mats
A zippered cotton cover over two one-inch inserts of natural Dunlop latex foam. Toki Kids says its cotton covers are GOTS certified organic and its foam inserts are OEKO-TEX certified, and the product page lists the mat as for floor use only and not intended for sleep.
Good to know: GOTS applies to the cotton cover and OEKO-TEX to the foam, as the brand describes them. The foam is natural latex, so check for latex allergy first. The brand's other covers, vegan leather and bamboo blend, are not GOTS.

Why a play mat cannot be organic as a whole
A padded mat is a small piece of soft furniture: a fabric cover wrapped around something springy. Only the fabric is a textile that organic rules can reach. A rubber, foam or polyester core is a manufactured material.
That is why honest mat labels come in two parts. One label speaks for the cover, and a different one speaks for the filling. If a product page gives a single logo and the word organic, you do not yet know what is inside.
Which label covers which layer
GOTS has two label grades. "Organic" needs at least 95 percent certified organic fibers, and "made with organic materials" covers 70 to 94 percent. A real GOTS label names the certification body and gives a certification number.
OEKO-TEX describes Standard 100 as a label for textiles tested for harmful substances, with every thread, button and accessory tested. It is a residue test. It does not tell you a fiber was grown organically, which is the difference our GOTS vs OEKO-TEX guide walks through.
GREENGUARD Gold comes from UL and is about volatile organic compounds, the chemicals a product releases into the air. It is the label you tend to see on foam tile and folding mats, where there is no fabric to certify.
| Label | What it checks | Layer it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| GOTS | Organic fiber content and textile processing | Cotton cover or shell |
| OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Harmful substances in a textile article | Fabric, batting or foam |
| GREENGUARD Gold | Chemical emissions into indoor air | The finished mat, often foam |
Safe use: awake, on the floor, watched
Play mats exist for floor time. The American Academy of Pediatrics describes tummy time as something for babies who are awake and being closely supervised, a few minutes at a time, a few times a day, starting soon after birth.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What is the filling, exactly, and does any certificate cover it?
- Is the GOTS claim for the fabric or for the finished mat, and what is the licence number?
- Does the cover come off for washing, and can the core get wet?
- If the core is natural latex, has anyone in the house a latex allergy?
- Has the mat been tested to the US toy standard, ASTM F963, if it is sold with toys or as a play gym?
Questions people ask
Is there such a thing as a fully organic play mat?
Not as a certified whole. The fabric can be certified organic under GOTS, but the finished mat is an assembled product with a core that is not a textile. The closest you will find is a mat where each layer has its own named certification. Read the product page for the cover and the filling separately.
What does GREENGUARD Gold mean on a foam play mat?
It means the product was tested for chemical emissions into indoor air under UL's GREENGUARD program, which is about volatile organic compounds. It is an air quality label. It does not mean the mat is organic or made of natural materials. Our nursery and sleep pages explain where the same label appears on mattresses and furniture.
Is natural latex foam safe for a baby's play mat?
Natural latex is a rubber foam that several mat makers use as an alternative to synthetic foam. The main caution is allergy: a brand we list tells buyers to check whether their baby has an allergy to latex in any form. If latex allergy runs in your family, ask your pediatrician before buying, or choose a mat with a different core.
Can my baby nap on a play mat?
No. The AAP advises that babies sleep on their backs on a firm, flat sleep surface, and that soft objects stay out of the sleep area. Tummy time and floor play are for babies who are awake and closely supervised. If your baby dozes off on the mat, move them to the crib or bassinet.
How do I wash an organic cotton play mat?
Follow the maker's care label, because mats differ. Of the mats listed here, the quilted Makemake Organics mat is machine washable on a gentle cycle. Toki Kids says to wash its zip-off cover separately, spot clean the latex foam with mild soap and water, and keep the foam out of direct sunlight. It also notes that its cotton cover is not pre-shrunk.
