Organic Pajamas

Organic pajamas are worth checking twice, because sleepwear lines mix fabrics. One print may be GOTS certified organic cotton and the next a polyester fleece. Look for GOTS certification of the finished set with a number you can look up, and read the fiber line on the exact style you are buying.

What organic means here

This page lists adult pajamas from companies that appear in the GOTS public database as certified entities, with the GOTS claim confirmed on the brand's own page. Woven sets can be all cotton. Rib-knit sets usually add spandex, which GOTS allows in limited amounts, and we state the blend.

Look for

  • The GOTS logo with a label grade, the certifier's name and a certification number
  • The fiber line for the exact print or color, not only the collection headline
  • The seller's name in the GOTS public database, with sleepwear among its products
  • Whether the set is woven, which is usually all cotton, or a rib knit with spandex

Be wary of

  • Collections that mix organic cotton prints with polyester fleece or conventional flannel
  • "Bamboo" pajamas: the FTC says the fabric is usually rayon and must be labeled as rayon
  • "Organic" in a product name with no certifier and no certification number
  • Assuming an adult set follows the snug-fit rules written for children's sleepwear

Products that carry the certification

What GOTS covers on pajamas

GOTS certifies the finished textile, not only the cotton. A set labeled "organic" must contain at least 95% certified organic fiber, and "made with organic materials" at least 70%. The standard restricts chemical inputs in dyeing and finishing and sets social criteria for the factories.

GOTS says every company that is part of the process must be certified for the end product to carry the label. That matters for printed pajamas, where fabric may pass through a separate print house. The label itself should show the logo, the grade, the certification body and a certification number.

Woven sets, rib knits and stretch

Button-front pajamas in poplin, chambray or sateen are woven and need no stretch, so they are often 100% cotton. Knit sets are cut closer and rely on stretch. The two knit sets on this page each state 5% spandex.

GOTS allows that. Version 8.0 of the standard, released in 2026, permits up to 10% virgin synthetic fibers such as elastane. A 95% organic cotton knit still meets the threshold for the "organic" grade. Buttons, waistband elastic and drawcords are treated as accessories under separate rules.

Flannel, fleece and bamboo in the same collection

Sleepwear brands often sell several fabrics under one collection name. An organic cotton print can sit beside a polyester fleece or a flannel with no organic claim. Read the fiber line on each listing.

Bamboo is the other common one. The FTC says a textile cannot be called bamboo unless it is made directly from bamboo fiber, and that soft bamboo fabrics are generally rayon, which must be labeled as rayon or rayon made from bamboo. For daytime sets, see organic loungewear.

How to check a pajama claim

Find the certification number on the product page or sewn-in label, then search the company in the GOTS certified suppliers database. Brand names and legal names differ. Burt's Bees Baby, for example, is listed under Ayablu Inc.

If a page cites OEKO-TEX Standard 100 instead, that tells you the finished item was tested for harmful substances. It does not tell you the cotton is organic. Our guide to GOTS vs OEKO-TEX explains how the two fit together.

Questions people ask

Are organic cotton pajamas treated with flame retardants?

The organic claim does not answer that, and adult sleepwear is not covered by the children's sleepwear standards described on the CPSC page we cite. For children's sizes, the CPSC says garments must either pass flammability tests or meet tight-fitting requirements. If a flame retardant finish concerns you, ask the brand directly how a specific style complies.

Is a pajama set made with GOTS certified cotton the same as a GOTS certified set?

No. GOTS states that partial certification cannot be presented as full product certification, and that the chain of custody breaks if certified fabric is sewn in an uncertified facility. A certified set carries the GOTS logo with a label grade, the certifier and a certification number that you can look up in the public database.

Why do some organic pajamas contain spandex?

Knit pajamas rely on stretch to fit closely and keep their shape. The knit sets on this page blend 5% spandex, also called elastane, into the cotton. GOTS Version 8.0 allows up to 10% virgin synthetic fibers of that kind. If you want no synthetic fiber in the fabric, choose a woven set and check the waistband elastic.

Are bamboo pajamas organic?

Treat the claim with care. The FTC says most bamboo textiles are rayon and that calling them bamboo is not allowed unless they are made directly from bamboo fiber. It also notes that rayon production typically uses toxic chemicals. That is a different thing from certified organic cotton processed under GOTS rules.

Do men's and women's sets in a matching collection have the same fabric?

Not always. Within one print, the women's set might be a rib knit with spandex while the men's is a different cut or a flannel. Each listing should state its own fiber content, which US law requires on the label along with country of origin and the responsible company. Check every piece you plan to buy.
